University of Maryland | MicroMasters®
The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business will launch the MicroMasters program in MBA Core Curriculum through EdX in August 2018. The program is set up as a series of seven, online MBA courses, which students can take to help boost their knowledge in a particular subject area. Or they have the option to complete the full program for a certificate and transferable credits toward an online MBA degree. The full program currently costs $1,500. Says the dean of the Smith School of Business, Alexander Triantis, “We are making high-quality education more affordable for more people.” Completion of the full MicroMasters program set students up with 25 percent of their online MBA degree complete for a fraction of the cost.
These courses are the first for the MicroMasters program to be transferable to a full MBA degree.
The first of the series of courses is Marketing Management, which will start on August 6, 2018. The subsequent courses will launch over the following 16 months, after which each course will be offered twice a year. The seven courses included in the program are Marketing Management, Leadership and Influence, Financial Accounting, Data Analysis for Decision Makers, Strategic and Transformation IT, Corporate Finance, and Global Business Strategy.
EdX offers asynchronous classes with various levels of engagement to help support the educational goals of students while they balance their education with their other obligations. It is a nonprofit, open-source, online educational platform that has connections to over 130 institutions, both higher education and other organizations. It was begun in a joint effort by Harvard University and MIT.
The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business offers undergraduate, several MBA programs, as well as other masters, PhD, and executive education programs. It is accredited by the AACSB International. The University of Maryland is a public research university with its flagship campus in College Park, Maryland. Over 39,000 students are enrolled across over 100 undergraduate majors and 120 graduate programs. It has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
Temple Univeristy Business School Dean Fired
Temple University’s business school dean, Moshe Porat, was fired this month after an investigation around inflated test scores and grade point averages used to figure MBA rankings. The investigation led to a four-month review by the law firm Jones Day. The university is now being reviewed by the Pennsylvania consumer-protection agency, as the behest of the attorney general, to see if Temple has broken the law regarding marketing practices or if any of the other schools in the university have used false data.
Porat had served as the Fox School of Business and Management dean for 22 years. He was asked to step down immediately after the results of the results of the review were released. According to Temple President Richard Englert, “Fox School, under the leadership of Dean Moshe Porat, knowingly provided false information to at least one rankings organization about the online MBA.”
For four years in a row, the Fox has held the number one spot in the U.S. News and World Report ranking for online MBA programs. It is now listed as unranked due to the controversy. This month, Temple announced it has new data reporting procedures and will hire additional staff to oversee data collection and oversight.
Temple University is a public, research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has over 40, 000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students across over 500 degree programs. It holds accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Fox School of Business and Management offers several MBA degrees as well as other master and PhD programs. Its enrollment is around 6,500 students. It has been accredited by the AACSB.
Purdue University Global Online MBA
Back in March 2018, Purdue was given final approval to buy the for-profit Kaplan University, which has led to the launching of Purdue University Global in April. What used to be Kaplan’s online MBA program is now an online MBA through Purdue University Global. It offers concentrations in finance, healthcare management, human resources, information technology, marketing, and project management. In total, the program is 60 to 76 credits, depending on if a student chooses to pursue a concentration or not. ThePurdue University Global program is in addition toPurdue’s existing Executive MBA program through their Krannert School of Management.
Purdue University Global is a mostly online, public university offering associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees and currently has around 30,000 students, who were Kaplan students before the buy-out. It has been accredited by the ACBSP. Purdue is a public research university in West Lafayette, Indiana and is home to over 40,000 students. It holds accreditation from Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges & Schools.
